Back to School Road Safety Tips for Drivers and Students

Students are at more risk on our roads, in fact there are over 17 million near misses due to stop arm violations each year.

As we near the start of another school year, it’s important to know the rules when sharing the road with school buses.

Here’s what you need to know:
Slow Down.
Leave yourself extra time the first week of Back to School, there will be more traffic on the road.

Set a Good Example.
Obey posted school zone speed limits.
Do not pass another vehicle.
Obey crossing guards. Use good judgement when stopping or parking.
Do not make u-turns or back up.

Stop for the School Bus.
Follow these road safety tips every time when a school bus has stopped, lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended:
On two-lane roads, Traffic on both sides of the road must stop.
On Multiple lane roads, Traffic on both sides of the road must stop.
On a Road with a Median of any kind from concrete barriers to a strip of grass, traffic on the side of the road that the bus is on, must stop.

If you’re a student riding the bus:
Wait for the bus in a visible space that is 12 big steps back from the bus or the side of the road.
Look both ways before crossing the road in front of the bus (never cross behind the bus) and make sure the bus driver can see you).
Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it.
Always load and unload from the bus in a single file.
Find a seat and sit down immediately.
Make sure to keep your head, arms and all personal belongings inside the bus at all times.

These safety tips were brought to you by your local school district and Safe Fleet - Driving Safety Forward.

Together – we can be safe this school year.
